CIA During the Cold War
During the Cold War the United States relied heavily on the recently formed Central Intelligence Agency, or the CIA. The CIA used spies to gather information around the world. It also carried out covert operations to weaken or overthrow governments that were against the United States. The CIA first took action in the Middle East. The CIA gave several million dollars to rebels who would fight against their current leader, who was negatively affecting the US and their allies. They also helped Guatemala overthrow its current President for the same reason.
